STMicroelectronics Leverages AWS to Boost Designers Efforts to Develop Connectable IoT nodes
Amazon FreeRTOS is an open source operating system for microcontrollers that makes it easy to securely connect small and low-power devices to AWS cloud services
STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductor providing intelligent and energy-efficient products and solutions, announced that it has extended support for Amazon FreeRTOS with its latest starter kits for STM32 microcontroller, one of the widely recognised family of 32-bit ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers.
The company is leveraging the AWS for boosting efforts of designers to easily develop connectable Internet of Things (IoT) nodes by combining semiconductor building blocks STMicroelectronics and Amazon’s FreeRTOS.
FreeRTOS is a real-time operating system for microcontrollers that makes it easy to program, connect, deploy, manage and secure small and low-power edge devices.
Commenting on the development, Tony Keirouz, VP – IoT Strategy, Ecosystem and Partnerships, STMicroelectronics, said, “With pre-built security and connectivity libraries, Amazon FreeRTOS was designed to provide a turnkey solution to develop cloud-connected devices using STM32 microcontrollers.”
“With all the new connectivity options our aim is to jumpstart any IoT design using the combination of AWS node-to-cloud vertical solutions and the broad portfolio of ST’s IoT solutions and products including sensors, processing, security, connectivity, and power,” Keirouz added.
Making easy to connect low-power edge devices
Amazon FreeRTOS, based on the FreeRTOS kernel, is an open source operating system for microcontrollers that has been extended with software libraries. This makes it easy to securely connect small and low-power devices to AWS cloud services such as AWS IoT Core or to more powerful edge devices that operate on AWS IoT Greengrass.
In addition, STMicroelectronics is now providing support for the newly launched AWS IoT Device Tester. The Device tester is a service that is designed to assure full complianc of the company’s solutions with the AWS Device Qualification Program.
AWS IoT Device Tester enables shared customers of STMicroelectronics and AWS in saving time by reducing test-suite development and test-infrastructure. It also gives the customers peace of mind that Amazon FreeRTOS will work as designed on their STM32 microcontroller solution.
