Apple iPhone SE2 specs, news and rumours: Will we get a new iPhone SE?

Like us, you probably thought the iPhone SE was dead. But it lives on – Apple has started to re-sell it in the US at the remarkable price of $249. It’s been on sale from Apple’s refurb store a few times and is available again now, but you’ll need to be quick to get one.

Rumours continue to swirl that Apple is having a hard time selling the expensive iPhone XR and iPhone XS, with the US-China trade war further harming Apple’s bottom line.

With that and hugely increased competition from budget and mid-range smartphones, Apple needs to do something at the lower end of the market.

As far as we knew, Apple was still selling plenty of iPhone SE units despite the handset itself being nearly three years old now; the insides were similar to the iPhone 6S from late-2015.

Certainly, networks were still keen on stocking them during 2018. So now the tide has shifted slightly, will we get an iPhone SE 2?

Apple iPhone SE 2 design

  • Design based on iPhone XR?
  • Touch ID surely no longer on the cards

Apple is keen on moving completely towards Face ID – the iPhone XR paves the way for non-flagship Face ID phones. And like the XR, there will surely be no headphone jack. Contrary to what we previously thought, we no longer believe the design of a new SE 2 would be based upon the iPhone 8. Instead, we reckon it would be more akin to a smaller iPhone XR with less premium materials.

In 2018 case maker Olixar released a render supposedly based on specifications it’s been given, and it shows a notch design. While this could be for the XR, the design of the sides of this handset suggest it could be either a cancelled or delayed SE 2 instead.

This video also suggested the iPhone SE2 design would be more like the iPhone XS and XR.

This video – it surfaced in April 2018 – suggested that the new iPhone SE will have almost the same design but with one key difference; a glass back for Qi wireless charging. That’s unlikely we’d say given that the iPhone XR doesn’t have wireless charging.

In May it emerged that Mac Otakara obtained more information from a glass supply source, that says Apple is still testing three types of glass for the SE 2.

However, all three share the same traits, in that there are “no Touch ID holes and their upper portion are cut into the shape of TrueDepth cameras [aka the notch].”

Apple iPhone SE 2 display

  • Current display retained?
  • Would stick out in smartphone market

Rumours suggest that the iPhone SE will retain its current, enormously popular, smaller screen size of 4-inches.

A small size bump is possible, though the 326ppi retina display we first saw in the iPhone 5 remains enormously clear and crisp even if its 1,136 × 640 resolution is now dated.

3D Touch probably won’t arrive now it seems to have been sidelined, while it’s unlikely that True Tone would be supported in such an entry-level device.

Specs and camera

  • Based on relatively recent Apple hardware
  • Probably will use camera from the iPhone 8

We’d have thought the iPhone SE 2 would be based on a fairly recent Apple A-Series chipset – probably the A10 Fusion or A11 Bionic from the iPhone 7 or 8. The internal storage probably wouldn’t be that huge – perhaps 64GB – to keep costs down.

We’d also surely we’ll see the 12MP ƒ/1.8 aperture camera we’ve seen in other iPhones – maybe with up to 4K 60fps if the camera comes over from the iPhone 8.

We don’t think the SE 2 would support Qi wireless charging like the rest of the latest generation of iPhones, primarily due to cost.
